Gig Harbor Maritime Pier Ribbon Cutting on Monday

The City of Gig Harbor will host the ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Sept. 24.

The City of Gig Harbor will officially cut the ribbon on its new Maritime Pier and thank all of those who made this pier possible on Monday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m.

The ribbon cutting marks a significant accomplishment for the City, and follows decades of discussions to build Gig Harbor’s commercial fishing fleet a pier. The Gig Harbor commercial fishing fleet, once the largest on the West Coast, continues the tradition today with approximately 40 active vessels.

The new 156-foot drive-aboard pier includes ramp and float. It also provides access for loading and unloading for the fishing fleet, transient moorage and viewing, and water access for the public.

A variety of partners helped fund this project. The City of Gig Harbor, based on budget numbers, has contributed $1.6 million dollars to the project. An additional $378,000 in state funding was appropriated for the pier thanks to efforts from local state legislators Sen. Derek Kilmer (D-Gig Harbor), Rep. Larry Seaquist (D-Gig Harbor), and Rep. Jan Angel (R-Port Orchard).

The Gig Harbor Commercial Fishing Club also donated additional funds of $50,000.

Over the decades, hundreds of local citizens, fishermen, groups and organizations have supported the idea of a Maritime Pier in Gig Harbor, which is known as Washington’s Maritime City.

The new pier is just one piece of an on-going effort to preserve the heritage and culture of the community with facilities, parks, and historic properties through-out the historic waterfront that provide water access while keeping our cultural heritage a priority.
