Eight-Car Collision On I-5 In Tacoma Dome Causes Traffic Havoc

For anyone coming from the south via the freeway or west via State Route 16, prepare for a long wait.

An eight-car collision on northbound Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome caused traffic havoc just in time for the Friday afternoon commute.

The crash - which occurred around 2 p.m., at the I-5 interchange - slowed drivers coming from Lakewood, Gig Harbor and University Place to a crawl on the highway and kept it slow-moving until about 6 p.m.

At one point on eastbound State Route 16, traffic extended all the way to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

One Patch user posted a photo of a police vehicle that crashed on the side of the highway.

I have never understood why traffic backs up so bad on the side of the road that the accidents aren't on???? It is understandable to have it back up where the accidents are but it shouldn't on the other side.

It's because everyone has to see what's going on. Thus the slowdown.

I agree that drivers automatically slow down to look at an accident. It's ridiculous! And it's so mysterious why traffic around the Tacoma Dome in particular is always so bad. I think it's because there are lots of merging highways surrounding it, like 705 and 16. I like driving around the Tide Flats to get around it...

I got stuck in this nightmare yesterday. It took me an hour and a half to get from South Tacoma Way/512 to City Center. Craziness! I guess that's what happens when you get sunshine in February.

The reason is because of all the yahoos who fly around traffic to try and cut in the front of the line to go to gig harbor. Same thing happens on the fife curve as well except opposite, they fly down the side to cut in the left lane.
