Frugal Family: Let's Go To the Movies

Check out these local bargains that make Family Movie Night a reality.

Do you remember that iconic scene from the classic musical Annie where Daddy Warbucks treated the little orphan to a magical night at the cinema? There is something really special about a family trip to the theater, especially when you can manage it for a deal!

1. Family Matinees, 4649 Point Fosdick Dr. NW 253-857-SHOW

Deal: like The Sound of Music and The Shop Around the Corner are only $2 a person, with all proceeds benefiting the Peninsula Schools Education Foundation.

2. , 9911 Burnham Dr. 253-851-7529

Deal: The Paradise Theatre offers a number of opportunities to bring families to locally produced plays. It has extended its children's prices ($8 per ticket) all the way up to 25 years of age so any student with a valid ID can attend a show for the price usually reserved for 6 and under. The theatre also offers 2-for-1 deals on tickets if you call within 24 hours of a show.

3. The Grand Cinema, 605 South Fawcett Ave., 253-593-4474

Deal:  Step back in time with your family every third Saturday of the month to view free movies at the Grand’s historic theater. The Click! Family Flicks start at 10:30a.m. and are limited to the first 100 in attendance. Upcoming movies include Ghostbusters and Kung Fu Panda.

4. The Blue Mouse Theatre, 2611 North Proctor St., Tacoma 253-752-9500

Deal: Visit one of the country’s oldest continuously operated theaters at a great price every Monday for only $3 admission. Recent features included The Princess Frog and Chronicles of Narnia. Check The Blue Mouse Theatre site for updated listings and times. 

5. Free City Cinema with Metro Parks Tacoma, Locations vary 253-501-8900

Deal: Click! Cable TV, The Grand Cinema, and Metro Parks Tacoma have teamed up to bring free family fun nights that include movies, games, rock climbing and other entertainment to a variety of locations. Check the Metro Parks site for updated schedules. Next month’s feature is Iron Man 2 on Friday, March 4, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the People’s Neighborhood Resource Center.
