Gig Harbor Police Cite 139 Drivers For Cell Phone Use in May

Police Chief Mike Davis says one officer alone issued 101 cell phone tickets.

An emphasis on cell phone use among drivers resulted in Gig Harbor Police issuing 139 citations in May.

After officers were noticing increased illegal usage of cell phones, officers focused on violators.

“I’m pleased by the effort shown by our officers in addressing this issue head on - especially one officer who wrote 101 cell phone tickets himself,” said Police Chief Mike Davis.

“The response of violators who received tickets was also encouraging with most of them taking ownership for their actions," he added. "Of the many cited, it was reported that only two expressed indignation about the enforcement."

The department warns that despite May being over, it will continue looking for violators of the cell phone law, which prohibits drivers from moving or operating a moving vehicle with a wireless device up to his or her ear.
