Gig Harbor YMCA Announces Name Change, Youth and Teen Expansion Project

The Tom Taylor Family YMCA is planning to add 10,500-square-feet to its current facility to cater to the youths and teens in the Gig Harbor and Peninsula areas.

As of March 1, the Gig Harbor Family YMCA changed its name to Tom Taylor Family YMCA.

The facility was named after a Gig Harbor resident and YMCA member Tom Taylor, who has been contributing to the organization since it opened in 2007.

In addition to the name change, the Y announced a major project to provide a healthy environment for youths and teens in the Gig Harbor and Peninsula areas.

According to the YMCA website, it said:

The Gig Harbor Family YMCA Youth and Teen Expansion project allows the Y to increase much-needed services and offerings to children and teens in the Gig Harbor and Peninsula communities. The additional space and services will help us ensure every child on the Peninsula has a relationship with a caring adult through Y programs.

The 10,500-square-foot expansion will increase the overall facility size to 87,500 square feet. The state-of-the-art facility for youths and teens will include a youth gymnasium, teen center, adventure zone and child watch and nursery area.

The total project is expected to cost $3 million and relies on public and private donations.

  • Total project cost: $3,000,000
  • Government funding requests: $750,000
  • Private funding requests: $1,000,000-$2,250,000

The Tom Taylor Family YMCA serves 37,500 people. Out of that number, 5,200 are youth members.
