Mom's Escape: The Grand Cinema Creates Movie Magic

Love the movies? Let this intimate community supported theater take your excitement to another level.

Movie time!

Whether it's date night, time with friends, or just on your own, there's no better escape than catching a great flick that whisks you away into another world.

Noshing on buttery popcorn, sweet candy and pop is fun, too.

The movie-going experience captures everyone's imagination. Here's a local theater that not only captures the imagination, but puts a little bit of twist on going to the movie theater.

The Grand Cinema is a not-for-profit, long standing art-house theater in the heart of downtown Tacoma. This theater is fully community supported. Staffed by volunteers, art partrons and members, the Grand brings a rich movie and art experience to our area.

The theater itself is a small, intimate experience. Each theater space offers comfy seating in cozier seating arrangement (capacity 100 patrons or fewer).

While the theater specializes in delivering independent, foreign, and art-house movies, they also do some more mainstream releases as well (such as the Oscar nominated "True Grit").

Costs are lower than a regular movie theater for admission and snacks. General admission is $8.50 for prime viewing hours; matinees run $6. There are also senior, military, student and child discounts. If you are a Grand Cinema member, rates are lower ($1.50 discount on admission). Additional benefits include free members-only parking and movie passes, discounts on special events, free popcorn and more.

The Grand is also available to rent all or part of the theater for birthdays, anniversary parties or business gatherings.

This summer, the Grand celebrates the 6th Annual Tacoma Film Festival honoring global and local filmmakers. Meanwhile, the Gig Harbor Film Festival is set for Oct. 14 to 16.

See you at the movies!
