Along with its sponsors and  said they are working to make the 2011 Summer Sounds at Skansie concerts safe and enjoyable for all.

Due to heavy pedestrian and motor traffic in the tiny historic district, concert organizers are asking drivers not attending the event to use alternate routes and avoid downtown on Tuesday nights.

“As in years past our mission is to make sure we keep pedestrians separated from vehicles," said Gig Harbor Police Chief Mike Davis. "We appreciate folks that steer clear of the congestion downtown during the concerts and pick alternative routes to get home.”

Those who are attending the weekly event are asked to plan ahead, allow plenty of time and carpool if possible, said concert organizers. Attendees are encouraged to come down and have dinner in one of the downtown restaurants early, then settle in to the park for the shows which run 6:30-8 p.m. each Tuesday.

On July 19, Harborview Drive between Pioneer and Rosedale will be closed to traffic between 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. during the annual Beatniks concert which draws the largest crowd of the summer. For more information, go to www.gigharborguide.com.

Patch will be covering the kick-off concert tonight. Make sure to check back for photos.

The boat is heading toward the Tacoma side of the bridge. Gig Harbor is well astern. If the tideRead More is going out, and the boat maintains its heading, it will wind up at Sunset Beach off to the left of the picture.

Ugh. That's not good, Starla. How many times a week do you and husband cross, or at least try toRead More cross that crosswalk.

I have seen orange flags (like the kind you use on the boat with a water skier) used at crosswalksRead More in Redmond. Perhaps putting a PVC pipe in the ground on either side of the road or attached to the nearby sign posts with a few flags inside for you to hold out/carry to the other side when you're crossing would be helpful?

Brent, we cross it about at least once a week.
