Uptick in Revenue to Save Pierce Transit's Service Cuts

Despite the approval of Pierce Transit's Service Reduction Plan in June, the transportation agency said it will not be cutting routes this September.

Amid service cuts and funding issues, the Pierce County Transit officials have some good news for the local residents.

Thanks to an 11-percent growth in sales tax revenue, the agency said it will notΒ be reducing its service by 28 percent, come September, The News Tribune reports.

The news comes after the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the Service Reduction Plan in June 2013 to compensate for the failure of Proposition 1 in the last general election. The proposal would have increased local sales taxes by 0.3 percent in Pierce County.Β

The revenue increase through this April also means it would save nearly 84 jobs--about 10 percent of the agency's workforce--from the chopping block, the TNT said.

The Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the decision at its special meeting on Wednesday, July 31.

If approved, Pierce Transit will be able to provide the current services through June 2014, according to the TNT.
