Longtime Gig Harbor waterfront resident, Mary Jackson, shares her passion and insights into her world with a new solo exhibition, “The Road of Little White Lies” at Morso June 24 – July 18, 2011. Morso is hosting a Meet the Artist Opening Reception June 24th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
For Mary, painting is traveling from one work to the next, a constant close look at the world. Mary asks, “How far can you change an object before it becomes something else? Does it have to be anything at all in order for a painting to say something?”
Mary has always loved art. Her first lessons were taught by Don Buchanan at the Old Crescent Valley Schoolhouse in the late 1950s when she was 8 years old. She still smiles today each time she passes the Crescent Valley Schoolhouse. She now paints in the basement of her grandmother’s home on picturesque Dorotich Street overlooking Gig Harbor Bay.

Mary’s always been involved in community service endeavors utilizing her art talent. In the ‘70s, she taught life drawing classes through Tacoma Community College at McCord AFB and in the ‘80s, her friend Theresa Malich taught an art class at Purdy Women’s Prison with Mary assisting. At Phoebe House in Tacoma, a home for women in drug and alcohol recovery and their children, Mary has taught arts and crafts as a volunteer. Mary also has volunteered at Henderson Bay High school and taught art again in the classes of Theresa Malich.
In 1972, she graduated from Central Washington State College with a BA is Art and Philosophy.
