Puyallup Fair

September in the Pacific Northwest is known for the largest single event in Washington, the Puyallup Fair. The Fair got its start in 1900, and gains popularity every year, drawing over one million guests. The 2011 Puyallup Fair runs Sept. 9-25 at the Puyallup Fair & Events Center.

Kicking off the Fair on Sept. 9 is the annual cattle drive and the Puyallup Fair Western Rodeo Parade at 10 a.m. on Meridian Street in downtown Puyallup. Corriente cattle lead the way, followed by draft horse hitches, marching bands, equestrian drill teams, and costume characters. The parade is sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts and Famous Dave’s of Washington.

The Puyallup Fair offers tradition and trendy, all wrapped into one. Old-time favorites include animal shows, 4-H and FFA students competing, grange displays, home arts cooking contests and quilts, the International Photo Exhibition that draws entries from all corners of the globe, Hobby Hall, floral designs, and rides, including the new thrill ride, Vertigo.

Sometime during the Fair the 100 millionth scone will be sold, and the person who most closely guesses the date and time will win $1,000 and a year’s supply of scone mix. For traditionalists, there are onion burgers, carmel apples, grilled corn, and much more. Adventurist diners will enjoy the zaniness of Deep Fried Kool Aid, frog legs, fried pickles and more.
