QFC May Be Gone, But Pancakes Will Be There

The QFC store, on Judson Street in Gig Harbor, may  be history, but the traditional Kiwanis pancake breakfast which kicks off the Maritime Gig will be in its’ usual spot on Saturday morning, June 4.  For many years Gig Harbor Kiwanis has served a free pancake breakfast to all comers in front of the store as an opener to the Gig celebration.

Arrangements have been made with the property managers to keep the tradition alive… this year however, without the support of the store. This will make the job a little more complicated for the volunteer pancake flippers, sausage and coffee servers, but breakfast will be served on time… from 7:00 to 10:00 on Saturday morning, June 4th.

Jim Bannon, who managed the breakfast “for more years than I can remember,” now has a “pancake partner,” Bill Fogarty.  Jim says, “we have served pancakes in a lot of different locations over the years. Here it was always pretty easy because we had some store facilities we could use.  This year we will just fall back on what we have learned at less handy spots. The pancakes will be ready.”

It takes a crew of about a dozen Kiwanians to serve breakfast to around 300 people who show up ready to kickoff the Maritime Gig.  The Club brings in grills, tables, chairs and all the other stuff you need for a good breakfast.  This year, because QFC is closed, there will be more area under cover… important in case of rain. Kiwanians cook pancakes, Chum Burgers and other “goodies” at  a number of Gig Harbor events each year. They have had plenty of experience.

The Gig breakfast is free, but donations are always appreciated. Funds collected are used by Gig Harbor Kiwanis for projects supporting children and young people in our community.
