FFA, 4-H Students Bring in $179K at NW Jr. Livestock Auction

Les Schwab of Gig Harbor purchased the 4-H Grand Champion lamb, FFA Grand Champion hog and 4-H Grand Champion hog.

FFA and 4-H students’ hard work and preparation for the Northwest Junior Livestock Show and Sale paid off as they brought in $179,995 at the auction held on Sunday, April 21.

The students prepared and showed their hogs, steers and sheep Thursday through Saturday, with the auction on Sunday, all held at the Spring Fair in Puyallup. 

A total of 117 hogs were sold, with a final average rate of $3.14 per pound.

Les Schwab of Gig Harbor also purchased the FFA Grand Champion hog owned by Linsey Sturgill of Castle Rock and the 4-H Grand Champion hog owned by Rico Montalvo of Graham.

An average price of $2.45 per pound applied to the 24 steers sold.

Butcher Boys of Puyallup purchased the 4-H Grand Champion steer owned by Ryan Rogers of Eatonville.

Olsons Meats of Enumclaw purchased the FFA Grand Champion steer, owned by Clay Shelton of Rosalia.

A final total of 33 lambs were auctioned, at an average rate of $4.76 per pound.

Coastal Farm & Ranch of Auburn purchased the FFA Grand Champion lamb, owned by Alyssa McGee of Sumner.

The 4-H Grand Champion lamb, owned by Alex McGee of Sumner, was sold to Les Schwab of Gig Harbor.

The total amount raised at the auction was an increase of $31,395 from last year’s sales. Sale proceeds are given to the FFA and 4-H participants.

The Spring Fair started in 1900, and is part of the Washington State Fair. The Washington State Fair is the largest fair in the state, and hosts the state fairs for both 4-H and FFA.
