Java & Clay to Add Beer and Wine to Its Menu

Just in time for the Maritime Gig Festival weekend, Java and Clay Cafe will be serving beer starting Saturday, June 4.

owner Randy Blue and his employees spent the Friday afternoon stocking shelves with canned soft drinks, and when customers stop by on Saturday, they'll be able to buy beer for the first time at the cafe.

Early Friday afternoon, Java and Clay got the okay to serve beer and wine under the Washington State Liquor Control Board's temporary liquor license, according to Blue. He said he spent the previous night painting the minimum 42-inch barrier by his patio, which is required by the state law.

"We're excited about the progress we've made to offer beer and wine at Java and Clay," he said.

Its restaurant license allows the cafe to serve beer and wine without turning away those under 21. It will also be able to sell six-pack beers with its off-premises license.

Blue said starting Saturday, the cafe will be carrying two types of canned beer from and hopes to serve beers on tap in the future.

"We've boosted up our smoothies," said Blue, who is gearing up for a busy and warm-weather weekend for the annual Maritime Gig Festival. "We are also introducing frozen strawberry lemonade and raspberry lemonade (for the first time)."

With more than 20,000 people expected to attend the festival, Blue said he and his employees are ready for a jam-packed weekend.
