Go Fly Your Flag

Make sure you're celebrating the Fourth in fashion by observing proper flag etiquette.

There are many rules and regulations about how and when to fly a flag and how show your patriotism. Use this guide as directed by the United States Flag Code.

The flag should always be treated with respect, as outlined in the U.S. Flag Code, though, contrary to popular belief, it is not punishable by law to handle the flag in a manner outside of these advisements. However, acts of desecration or burning could still be considered disorderly conduct or arson, so one should act accordingly.

HOW TO DISPLAY:

  • The flag should always be flown in a manner that does not touch the ground
  • The US flag should always be the center and highest when flown with other flags.
  • When displayed vertically, the union should be in the uppermost corner and on the viewer’s left.

 WHEN TO FLY:

  • It is universal custom to display the flag from sunrise to sunset.
  • If desired, the flag may be displayed 24-hours if properly lit.
  • Unless an all-weather flag is used, the flag should not be displayed in inclement weather.
  • The flag should be displayed on all days, with emphasis on federal holidays and notable days as proclaimed by the President.
