NORAD Fighter Jets to Drill Over Area Today

The North American Aerospace Defense Command will be practicing intercept and identification procedures in the Seattle area on June 19.

The sound of fighter jets could be heard over Kirkland and the Seattle area today during practice drills by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

NORAD will be practicing intercept and identification procedures in several areas of the country June 19-21, including June 19 in the Puget Sound area and along the Washington Coast.

The flights are scheduled for early morning, but they could be delayed by weather, NORAD reports.

A NORAD press release says “Those in the vicinity … may hear and/or see NORAD-controlled fighter jets in close proximity to a military or military contracted aircraft, which will be taking on the role of tracks of interest.”

The drills are designed to test “response, systems and equipment” in a variety of scenarios, including hijackings, air space violations and unknown aircraft.

For more information, here's the full NORAD press release.
