THIS WEEKEND: Jazz Fest, Plant Sale and Cemetery Cleanup

Events in the Gig Harbor area this weekend.

Where/When:  on Friday, May 4, at 10 a.m. to Noon.

Why Go: Photographer Molly Finnell will be taking photos in honor of Mother's Day. This event benefits Backpacks for Kids, a program which supplies backpacks full of non-perishable food items to local kids in need. Without this program many kids would go home hungry on weekends.

Cost: $15

 

Where/When: Artondale Cemetry at 5512 Hunt St. NW on Saturday, May 5 at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: The Artondale Cemetery is hosting its annual clean up at the historic cemetery, which was established in 1895. Volunteers are needed to help remove leaves and branches. There will be a hot dog barbeque lunch from noon to 3 p.m.

Cost: Free

 

Where/When: on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m.

Why Go: Come celebrate spring by stopping by the annual Ripple Effect Plant Sale. There will be more than 500 pots of healthy plants for sale. All proceeds will . Last year, the organization completed two village water systems for about 1,000 people, distributed more than 200 farm animals, established 80 gardens and finished one health clinic. There will also be Guatemalan jewelry and textile available to purchase.

Cost: No admission fees.

 

Where/When: on Saturday, May 5, at 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Bring your kids for Arts and Crafts with Hannah and Maureen at the Fox Island Museum. They will be using their creative skills to make Mom and Dad a colorful present using pen and paper, flowers, feathers and stickers!

Cost: Free to members; $5 to non-members

 

Where/When: on Saturday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: If you’re in the mood for some jazz music, the Jazz Fest on Saturday will feature professional and local school bands, including TCC Jazz Band, GHHS Jazz Choir, PHS Jazz Band, Arletta Sound and a GHHS rock band. Each group will play a short set and professional soloists will entertain between groups. CDs will also be available.

Cost: $4 (all proceeds go to professional players and Peninsula High School Bands)

I have seen orange flags (like the kind you use on the boat with a water skier) used at crosswalksRead More in Redmond. Perhaps putting a PVC pipe in the ground on either side of the road or attached to the nearby sign posts with a few flags inside for you to hold out/carry to the other side when you're crossing would be helpful?
