It Is Flea and Tick Season

Are you and your pets ready for flea and tick season?

If you haven’t all ready started using flea and tick preventative on your dog it is time. Speak to your Veterinarian clinic to determine which product is best for your dog. You must take in to consideration your dog’s age, size and current health and usual activity level.

I hike with my dog so I always use a product that will protect her from ticks as well as fleas. I personally use Frontline Plus.  K9 AdvantixII also protects against fleas and ticks and repels and kills flies and mosquitoes as does Bio Spot Defense Spot on. All of these products have different ingredients so it is important to check with your veterinarian to determine which is best for your dog.

Flea products for cats and dogs are not interchangeable so be sure the product you are using is for the right animal.

All of the above products are put on the dog’s back between the shoulder blades. The products should not come in contact with human skin. So be careful when applying and be sure to keep the pet away from children, no petting until the product has completely dried.

All of these products are applied monthly through the flea and tick season. I usually take about four months off from November through February. If you take your dog to doggy day care, dog parks or for boarding you may wish to use these products all year long.

If you prefer to use an all natural product please check with your veterinarian. Just because a product is all natural doesn’t mean it is necessarily safe for your dog.

Besides using a flea and tick preventative be sure to groom your dog regularly to check for fleas and ticks as well as flea irritation. A dog that is allergic to fleas can quickly damage their skin and create what is called a “Hot Spot”. Hot Spots usually need veterinary care to heal. Also vacuum your house and wash the dog’s bedding on a regular schedule. Fleas love to live in rugs and bedding.

With a little preventative care you should be able to go through the year with a flea and tick free house and dog.
