Insurance 101 - What if I hit a deer?

I love the natural beauty that surrounds us in Gig Harbor. With that beauty comes the increased presence of deer. What coverage do I need if I were to hit a deer?

One of the many wonderful things about living in Gig Harbor is all the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are surrounded by amazing views of the waterfront, mountain ranges and green forests.

With that beauty also comes the presence of different types of wildlife. Deer are very prevalent in my neighborhood, and probably in your neighborhood too. They seem to love eating my apples, pears and roses. With the increased number of deer surrounding us we need to understand what coverage we need when one of them darts in front of us while we are driving.

First let's consider some of the statistics involving deer. An estimated 1.23 million deer-vehicle collisions occurred in the U.S. between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, costing more than $4 billion in vehicle damage. So what type of coverage do you need to be covered in the event you were involved in a collision with a deer?

Some people think that you would need to have collision coverage to be covered. However, when wildlife is involved in an accident you need to have comprehensive coverage. If you don't know if you have comprehensive coverage call your professional insurance agent and find out.

Now how about some tips to try and avoid an accident with a deer:

First, stay alert. I have been focusing on texting and driving lately, and for a good reason. When it comes to deer it is especially important. You won't have a lot of time to stop when a deer darts in front of you. If you are distracted you won't stand a chance of stopping in time.

Second, use your high beams when there isn't any oncoming traffic. This will help you see the deer better.

Lastly, be aware that at dawn and sunset they are often on the move. Unfortunately, this is also when they are the hardest to see.

Do you have any tips to help avoid hitting a deer? Please share any tips you have in the comment section.

The bitterness of poor coverage lingers long after the sweet price is forgotten.

When I worked in Eugene, Ore., I would see at least 3 deer on the side of the road every morning (I went to work at 2 a.m. for the morning show on local TV news). My co-workers told me to not slow down if I was about to hit a deer. Braking causes your car to dip--more likely chance the deer might crash into your windshield. They also told me not to swerve to avoid a deer. If you end up hitting a tree or a stop sign instead, that's your own fault...

And always carry a hunting knife because, like my father always warned me, anything you kill you have to skin and eat :)

The boat is heading toward the Tacoma side of the bridge. Gig Harbor is well astern. If the tideRead More is going out, and the boat maintains its heading, it will wind up at Sunset Beach off to the left of the picture.

Ugh. That's not good, Starla. How many times a week do you and husband cross, or at least try toRead More cross that crosswalk.

I have seen orange flags (like the kind you use on the boat with a water skier) used at crosswalksRead More in Redmond. Perhaps putting a PVC pipe in the ground on either side of the road or attached to the nearby sign posts with a few flags inside for you to hold out/carry to the other side when you're crossing would be helpful?

Brent, we cross it about at least once a week.
