Harbor History Museum to Host Lecture on Seattle World's Fair

The has announced that it will be hosting a special lecture on the book, The Future Remembered: The 1962 Seattle World’s Fair and Its Legacy. The lecture will feature authors and HistoryLink.org historians Paula Becker and Alan Stein as they take you behind the glitter and diplomacy and into the world of civic leaders, elected officials, and public citizens behind the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair’s success. 

“The Seattle World’s Fair brought so many people into our area, putting our beautiful Puget Sound on the map. We are very excited to host such an interesting presentation,” said Sue Loiland, Executive Director.

The Century 21 Exposition drew in 10 million visitors, and captured America at the peak of Cold War tensions, on the cusp of a cultural revolution. Becker and Stein have developed a visual presentation that documents the colorful history of this era and Seattle’s signature event.

The program will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. The 60-minute program will also allow time for questions and answers, and an opportunity for those who attended the fair to share their memories of the Seattle World’s Fair. Museum Members are free to attend, non-members are admission plus $1.00. 

Paula Becker and Alan Stein also co-wrote Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition: Washington’s First World’s Fair. Paula Becker’s essays for HistoryLink.org document the dance marathon craze of the 1920s and 1930s, war effort knitting on the home front during World Wars I and II, and the career of The Egg and I author Betty MacDonald, among many other subjects. In addition to numerous essays for HistoryLink.org, Alan Stein has written books about the histories of Washington State Ferries, the city of Bellevue, and Seattle’s Olympic Hotel. He is a past president of the Association of King County Historical Organizations, and is the Ex Noble Humbug of Doc Maynard Chapter 54-40, E Clampus Vitus. 

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society DBA Harbor History Museum was founded in 1963, and opened a museum in 1973.  The mission of the Harbor History Museum is to create opportunities to experience the history of the Gig Harbor Peninsula. We do this by collecting, preserving and sharing this area's history. Our vision is to be the cornerstone providing a sense of identity for our community. The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., except major holidays.
