After a two-year reign as the top girls' name in America, it was Sophia, instead, that topped the Social Security Administration's 2011 list of the most popular baby names. The Greek name, meaning "wisdom," was the second-most popular name the year before.
Jacob, on the other hand, remains the most popular boys' name for the 13th year in a row. "Twilight" fans, rejoice. Its runner-up for 2011 is Mason, which shows just how much influence celebrities have on pop culture -- both Kourtney Kardashian and Melissa Joan Hart have sons with that name.
Meanwhile, Washington state appears to be ahead of the curve: , along with Jacob for the boys. Nationally, Sophia entered the top 100 for the first time in 1997 and hit the top 10 in 2006. Its sister spelling, Sofia, was 19th last year.
The names with the biggest change in popularity for 2011 are Briella (from 891 in 2010 to 497 last year) and Brantley (416 to 320).
