Alleged Peninsula Market Shooter Not Guilty Due To Insanity

Laura Sorensen will now be committed to Western State Hospital, possibly for the rest of her life.

The woman who opened fire inside the Peninsula Market last year -- injuring three men, one of whom eventually died -- will now possibly spend the rest of her life at Western State Hospital.

The News Tribune is reporting that Laura Sorensen, 21, was found not guilty due to reason of insanity Thursday, a verdict that most likely means she will spend almost the rest of her life at the state mental hospital in Lakewood.

According to reporter Sean Robinson, Sorensen had a history of untreated mental illness:

"Prosecutors didn’t fight the insanity defense. That meant an agreed outcome: no jury, no trial in the usual sense, an instant verdict and no sentencing."

"Deputy Prosecutor Lori Kooiman said the decision to accept an insanity defense was difficult and rare."

Sorensen walked into the Lake Kathryn Village and opened fire Aug. 11, 2012, sending law enforcement into Β a frenzy and sending Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor residents into a panic.
