Family Escapes Safely After Early Morning Fire

Around 5 a.m. Gig Harbor Fire & Medic responded to a house fire.

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to a residential fire in the 6600 block of the 87th Street NW this morning around 5.Β 

Fire officials said two adults and their small child evacuated the home after the smoke detectors went off, and firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly.

Battalion Chief Steve Nixon said it appeared the fire started near the front door of the home and traveled up the exterior wall in to the void space between the ceiling and the roof of the structure.

After examining the site, an investigator from the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that the fire started due to an improper disposal of ashes in a container that were placed on the front porch. No one was injured, but officials are estimating $50,000 in damages.

Five engines, two medic units, one tender truck and one rehab unit responded with 20 personnel responded to the call.

The family declined help from the Red Cross stating they had a place to stay, and it appeared they would be able to retrieve most all of their belongings from the home.Β
