Fire Blotter: Firefighters Clean Up Fuel Spill

On Dec. 14, firefighters responded to a fuel spill. They arrived to find a vehicle accident with one car on its roof, leaking fluids. There was significant damage to the vehicle, and the driver had left the scene. The crew used absorbent pads to clean up the fuel spill and turned the scene over to the police department.

On Dec. 15, a woman drove her mother to a fire station for diabetic problems. The woman was unable to check the patient’s blood sugar because the patient was extremely argumentative and angry. Medics checked her blood sugar, found it to be too low and gave her some sugar. Within minutes, the patient’s demeanor immediately changed to alert, oriented and very friendly. Medics released the patient to the care of her daughter.

On Dec. 16, firefighters responded to a 4-month-old baby locked in a vehicle. Baby appeared to be in no distress and was awake and alert in his car seat. The Lieutenant told the mother that we do not have the tools to open the truck and a tow truck was called to open the door. The crew remained with the vehicle until it was open to ensure the baby was never in any danger.

On Dec. 17, firefighters were called to investigate a smoke complaint. They found a residence with a 10-by-10 unattended yard debris burn with heavy white smoke. The Lieutenant ordered the fire extinguished and advised the homeowner of residential burning regulations and how to acquire permit.

On Dec. 18, medics responded to a woman complaining of a rapid heartbeat. After an examination, medics noted that her heart would beat fast when she moved or sat up. They transported her to the hospital for further evaluation.

On Dec. 19, medics responded to a woman who was bleeding from her ear. When medics arrived, she explained that she had been having ear pain, headache and dizziness for the past week but was unable to get to a doctor. That day, her ear pain was worse, and she had started to bleed from her ear. Medics transported her to the hospital.

On Dec. 20, medics responded to a 13-year-old child with special needs, who had pulled his trachea tube out. Upon arrival, the mother said she was having a difficult time replacing the trachea tube. The medics helped the parent insert the trachea tube back and left the patient in the care of his mother.
