Fire Blotter: Firefighters Respond to Smoke Complaint

On Feb. 1, firefighters responded to a reported house fire. Upon arrival, they found an abandoned home filled with smoke. Someone had lit a fire in the fireplace but the flue was closed, causing the smoke to fill the house. The crew made sure the fire was out and then returned to their stations.

On Feb. 2, medics responded to a woman fallen. She called only asking for help to get back up. But before medics arrived, she began to have an anxiety attack. The woman was also very short of breath. After an evaluation by the medic, he found that she had fluid in her lungs. The medic treated and transported her to the hospital.

On Feb. 3, medics responded to a home after a woman found her elderly mother unconscious. Upon arrival, the patient was alert but complaining of weakness. After an evaluation, the medic found irregularity in her heartbeats indicating a possible heart problem. She was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

On Feb. 4, Station 51 received a complaint of smoke in a neighborhood. They found a 4-by-6 burn pile. Because there was an air quality burn ban called by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, the crew immediately started extinguishing the fire while the lieutenant spoke with the homeowner. The homeowner was unaware that there was a burn ban and was very cooperative. The homeowner was informed that in the future, he needed to call the fire department for a burning permit and regulations before lighting any outdoor fire.

On Feb. 5, medics were dispatched to a threat of suicide. A friend of the patient called 911 because the patient had been talking about killing herself for the past several days after breaking up with her boyfriend. Medics transported her to the hospital for further evaluation

On Feb. 6, medics were called to evaluate a man in the custody of the Gig Harbor Police Department. The man was intoxicated, combative and uncooperative. He had sustained a few abrasions to his face during a struggle with an officer to take him into custody. The medic cleaned the surface wounds, and the man was placed under arrest.

On Feb. 7, firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle roll over. The driver was driving down a narrow roadway when he pulled over too far to the right. The vehicle then rode up on the bank and rolled over onto the driver’s side. The driver was uninjured. A tow truck was called to remove the vehicle.
