A short time later, a 16-year-old football player suffered a head injury when he was tackled. He was evaluated and transported for treatment after complaining of weakness and tingling in his hands.

On Sept. 19, firefighters responded to a garage fire after oily rags used for deck staining caught on fire. The rags initially ignited a battery-operated car in the homeowner’s garage on 62nd Street NW and spread to other objects in the building. The fire did not extend to the home, and the family was alerted by a smoke alarm placed in the garage. The estimated loss is about $10,000 to the structure and contents.

On Sept. 19, a fire started in an upstairs bedroom on 81st Avenue Court NW and spread to blankets, sleeping bags and clothing in the room. The homeowner had used two fire extinguishers to attempt to control the fire. Crews opened the walls in the bedroom to confirm no extension of fire had occurred. The fire was caused by the two young kids who took a lighter and lit a toy and a plastic hanger in the bedroom, according to the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s office.

On Sept. 20, a passerby noticed smoke coming from an area of beauty bark near Wagner Way. She attempted to extinguish the smoldering bark but was unsuccessful. Crews used water and overhauled the area with a pick and shovel to fully extinguish the smoke.
