Fire Department: Clear Access to Homes and Businesses Crucial During Emergencies

Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One is asking property and business owners to clear branches and shrubs for the fire department to access during emergencies.

In light of the , the Gig Harbor Fire Department is asking property and business owners to make sure their homes are accessible during emergency situations.

While firefighters were able to put out the flames with minimal loss to the home, two of their fire engines were damaged while trying to enter the driveway.

According to the Public Information Officer for , Eric Waters, overgrown mature trees and brush hindered their access to the house.

"Whether a medical emergency or a fire, providing the fire department clear access to your home or business is crucialespecially when minutes count," said Waters.

  • Clear branches, trees, shrubs and obstructions away from driveways enough for access of large emergency equipment. Emergency light bars and antennas are great targets for low hanging limbs. Driveways need to be cleared 12 feet wide and 12 feet high at a minimum.
  • Fire Hydrants – must have a 3-foot clearance around the hydrant free from any landscaping, to include an 18-inch radius from the center of the discharge ports, and 7 feet in height to allow room for firefighters with gear the necessary space to quickly operate the hydrant.
