Gig Harbor Police Sgt. Sharon Cox Resigns

Sgt. Sharon Cox's resignation was effective Jan. 14.

Gig Harbor Police Department's Sgt. Sharon Cox has resigned from her position earlier this month

Cox, who was Gig Harbor's first female officer promoted to sergeant, left the department as of Jan. 14.

She filed a legal claim against the Gig Harbor Police Department for harassment in September 2012 after the police guild issued a unanimous vote of no confidence against Cox. The guild also called her response “cowardice,” because she responded too slowly to the shooting in Key Peninsula, where one man was killed and two others injured.

At the conclusion of the internal affairs investigation into the matter, Cox was issued a letter of reprimand.

Police Chief Mike Davis said the claim was reviewed by outside investigators, and Cox's resignation was not part of any settlement.

She joined the Gig Harbor Police Department in 2007 and was promoted to sergeant in January 2011.

The department is currently recruiting to fill the vacancy, Davis said.

The story was first reported by The Peninsula Gateway.
