Westbound SR 16 Opens After Semi Collides into Olympic Drive Overpass

A collision on westbound SR 16 had traffic backed up starting at Olympic Drive Sunday early afternoon.

UPDATE 8:43 p.m.

WSP Trooper Guy Gill tweeted:

Update: All WB lanes of SR-16 are OPEN!

UPDATE 3:13 p.m.

WSP Trooper Guy Gill tweeted: 

SR-16 Overpass Strike Update: No injuries, and only 1 vehicle involved (Commercial Vehicle). Unknown ETA to re-open.

UPDATE 3:06 p.m.

Gig Harbor Police tweeted:

Semi load struck Olympic Dr overpass causing minor damage. Overpass closed until it can be inspected. Engineers en route. Unknown time frame

ORIGINAL STORY

WSDOT sent the following notice at 1:15 p.m:

Collision on SR 16 westbound at Milepost 10.7 near Olympic Drive. The westbound lanes are blocked. The traffic is diverted off SR 16 at Olympic Drive.

The Washington State Patrol is on scene.

WSP Trooper Guy Gill tweeted a photo of the damage on Twitter.

The overpass was repaired early last year after an oversized semi collided into the barrier in 2011.

Why doesn't the overpass have the height posted as others do around the country.

I have seen orange flags (like the kind you use on the boat with a water skier) used at crosswalksRead More in Redmond. Perhaps putting a PVC pipe in the ground on either side of the road or attached to the nearby sign posts with a few flags inside for you to hold out/carry to the other side when you're crossing would be helpful?
