Mamma Mia! Wallaby Caught in Gig Harbor

Pierce County Sheriff's deputies and animal control officers chased down and captured a wallaby named Mia today in Gig Harbor.

On a day devoted to groundhogs, a wallaby got the spotlight on Thursday when Pierce County Sheriff's deputies and Animal Control officers caught one in Gig Harbor.

According to Pierce County Sheriff spokesperson Det. Ed Troyer, what appeared to be a 2- to 3-foot kangaroo jumped out in front of a deputy's patrol car on 87th Ave Northwest earlier Thursday. Once authorities chased it down and captured the critter with a net, they learned that it was a female wallaby named Mia.

Troyer said they were able to find the owner a few blocks away and return Mia the Wallaby to safety.

"(Mia) gave the deputies and animal control a run for their money," Troyer wrote on his Facebook page.

Like kangaroos, wallabies are marsupials but are usually smaller than their kangaroo cousins, according to the National Geographic. They can grow up to almost 30 inches tall and weigh 50 pounds.
