VIDEO: Mock Crash Reminds Students to Drive Safely

Students from Gig Harbor and Peninsula high schools got a dose of reality as they witnessed a mock crash on Friday.

Fire engines and ambulances rushed to this morning, but it was all to teach the students an important lesson about driving safety.

The seniors from Gig Harbor and wrapped up their Teen Driving Awareness Week by witnessing the annual mock crash on Friday.

The fire departments from and teamed up with to stage a fatal crash involving alcohol and speeding.

The students watched intently as several of their classmates played the role of the drivers and passengers in the cars, which were torn into pieces by the end of the presentation.

Following the crash, Gig Harbor students walked to to attend the mock funeral for one of the passengers in the car.

As students enter prom and graduation season, Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One Prevention Specialist Nanette Tatom said it's a great reminder for drivers to make smart choices. 

"I just encourage our young drivers out there to really think seriously about what their doing," she said. "We want to try to plant the seed in their minds to remember there are things they can do to keep from becoming a statistic. And we don't want to see this kind of tragedy happen for real."
