Serious Crash Shuts Down Wollochet Drive Northwest in Both Directions

A two-car crash has closed Wollochet Drive in both directions Thursday evening.

Three were transported to the hospital after a two-car collision at Eastbay Dr. NW and Wollochet Dr. NW, according to Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One.

The accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. and injuries have not been reported to be life-threatening.

Traffic is backed up in both directions.

Really just drove by there. It takes 4 hours plus to clear an accident. Are you sure it happened at 6:15. If it did since there were no fatalities that is not saying much for our police department.
Anne January 25, 2013 at 06:32 AM
So, why is it that as of 9:30+pm the road is still blocked, no police to direct traffic? Back ups are horrific- folks are blundering around trying to find a way around to get home!
ashley January 25, 2013 at 06:52 AM
Be glad that its not you in the accident or a friend or family member and to be getting to go home instead of being in a hospital wondering what's next.. just because there were no fatalities doesn't mean that they couldn't have been paralyzed or lost limbs.. now relax and be thankful that all you had to do is sit in traffic or find a different route home.. thank the Lord

So I'm waiting off scene for access to road home. It is 11:15. What is the status? Is the road open yet?
Lauren Padgett (Editor) January 25, 2013 at 07:40 AM
Our last update from Gig Harbor police came at 10:30, saying the road should be open now. Sorry you're stuck in that mess... Sounds awful.
Anne January 25, 2013 at 03:34 PM
Trust me- we were praying because we thought the accident must have been very bad- We feared that there were fatalities. There were LOTS of teen drivers stuck in this mess, and I was concerned at lack of traffic control. Finding a route home is problematic in this area, especially in the dark and rain. It was a very dangerous situation, I am surprised that there were no additional accidents as a result.

News tribune wants 99 cents to read this story :(

Hopefully the construction company will repaint the lines, put in reflectors and make it easier for drivers to negotiate this area. When it's dark and rainy the glare of headlights makes it impossible to see where to go. We have several months left to get through this.

We all deserve better public service for our tax dollars then what was provided last night. I saw State Patrol but no Pierce County Sheriff cars? Eight ambulances and several fire department vehicles - BUT NOT ONE PUBLIC SERVANT standing in the street telling us that the road was closed. We all had to sit in line for an hour to finally get to the accident scene to find the road closed and were forced to turn around and go back the way we came and then aimlessly wander around the back roads of Gig Harbor for hours with thousands of our neighbors. What was most pathetic is that there are five newly constructed lanes available at the exact accident scene. Is it really possible that no one on site could figure out how to open one lane in each direction - or even one lane in one direction - to relieve the traffic? AND THIS WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE FOR 5 HOURS? REALLY?
Damon Adams January 25, 2013 at 07:24 PM
It takes time to do the investigation, so relax all you know it alls. The road is poorly marked at best and it was only a mater of time until this was gonna happen. Be glad that it didn't involve you or someone you know. Get over yourselves you are all so important

no thanks to the idiots driving the back roads.... white yukon (10pm), driving someone off the road isn't going to help your cause.....even if they are dui or not driving well, you on their butt, only adds you to the accident... you almost ran the person off the road no less than 5 times.... omg? this entire construction project is a JOKE, incomplete lanes and dangerous markings, street lights don't work, really surprised that move accidents haven't occurred. They have destroyed the OLD, built the ENTIRE safeway complex in less time than the wollochet construction plan....working hard guys also where have they been all month??.... nice weather, could finish....nah.... Bartles & Jaymes Construction Company....

It's not like people could just go around the block. I felt bad for that mile long + line of cars that went around via Hunt & Lombard Drive. I don't think Tucci and friends will be back to pave and stripe till summer.

I agree that it was very poorly managed. I, too, sat in the back-up for more than 90 minutes and when I finally got to the accident site I was told it would be closed for several more hours and to find another way home. I drove through rainy, dark roads for quite awhile trying to find my way to Fox Island. I'm not familiar enough with the the roads to make that an easy task. Five hours for a 2-car accident! Unbelievable.

You've also got groundwater running over the sidewalk and storm drains that are tire poppers and of course don't work until the final layer of asphalt is put down.

GO AROUND THE OTHER WAY!!!!! The are very few people that live in between East Bay (/Timber Lane) and Artondale Road!!! So unless you live in that specific area, (and I do) you have NO BUSINESS going thru there except to be curious as to what had happened!! How many people do you think that those policemen told to turn around and go the other way!!!??? Finally, he just gave up! If you stayed there for longer than 15 min, you're as ridiculous as the idiot driving while drunk!

Wow Randy, I am shocked! Your tirade above reads that you were displeased with the lack of information from the police personnel on scene and appear to be put out that you had to spend so much time in line just to be turned around and sent the other way. Not once did you mention the innocent victims that were/are clinging to life from this tragic event. I guess you should be grateful that even though it took you and others hours to get home, at least you had the opportunity to go home. The victims of this crash did not have the luxury of going home. Nothing like living in a self-serving society where it appears, "It's all about me."

I am shocked! It appears that the chief complaints in this forum are about the inconvenience suffered from having to spend hours in line to finally get turned around and sent the other way. In your tirades and displeasure, not once did you mention the innocent victims that were/are clinging to life from this tragic event. Be thankful that even though it took hours for you all to get home, at least you had the opportunity to go home. The victims of this crash did not have the luxury of going home. Nothing like living in a self-serving society where it appears, "It's all about me."

People think the cones and barrels are the center markers. This construction project is dangerous and poorly maintained. A serious accident was inevitable.
MICHAEL CASELEY January 26, 2013 at 07:42 PM
As a local bus driver ,I wonder why the whole reconstruction of Willochet was neccessary?? .It is more confusing now, feal sorry for visitors to the area ,construction has been long and slow, and oh yes the 6 guys looking in the hole while one faithfull shovells away or flaggers with cell phone in one hand and cigarette in other. What a show and waste of taxpayers money. Those people that got injured did not deserve the hurt and grief that they have suffered, our hearts go out to you.Mike C
Jack & Magda Haskell January 27, 2013 at 03:08 AM
To those who mention we should be thinking of the victims, yes, I think they are. The fact is, this could have happened to anyone who travels this route on a daily basis. These roads are more than double the hazard now than before any construction was started. Poor lighting, poor lines painted on wet roads, water on the roadway, no drainage, are just a few of the problems. Luckily we haven't had snow or ice to contend with. I figured this would happen sooner than it did and will not be surprised if there are more accidents.
Venture72 February 08, 2013 at 05:03 AM
Henry Gertje, who is it that just sits in the white county van every morning watching over an empty construction zone?
