WSP Sees Increase in Animal Collisions

The Washington State Patrol shares some tips to avoid colliding with animals on the road.

Animals are really on the move this time of year and many commuters see them on a regular basis without incident. Unfortunately, from time to time some of those animals make their way into the road and get struck by a vehicle.

So far this year, the Washington State Patrol troopers in Thurston and Pierce Counties have responded to 128 car vs. animal collisions that were reported. Of those car vs. animal collisions, 44 were on the interstate (I-5), 49 were on state routes and 35 were on county roads.

Now that it’s dark during the morning and evening commutes for most drivers, it’s even more important to pay extra attention to avoid collisions with animals.  Here are a few tips to help your stay safe while you’re driving:

  • Be cautious in early morning and evening hours, the most active time for wildlife.
  • Pay attention to animal crossing signs. They’re there because collisions have occurred at those locations in the past.
  • If you see an animal in the road DO NOT swerve to avoid it. If you swerve, you have a greater chance of leaving the roadway and striking a fixed object or another vehicle.

Keep these tips in mind while you’re traveling to and from your destination. Be attentive and drive safe.
