The resulting wear and tear already has led to the removal of smaller play structure on the site a couple of years ago. The parks commission wants a full redesign plan in place before further wear and tear forces the removal of additional playground facilities.

“We’d like to get some good direction from the public on it. We’re trying to be proactive on a future plan for this facility,” said Malich.

In addition to comments from residents, Gig Harbor schools will be among those invited to provide input. The commission is eager to hear ideas on what play facilities should be included in the new redevelopment plan.

Among other issues likely to be considered are whether the play area needs more handicap accessibility and whether new surface material, like rubberized matting, should replace the existing engineered wood chips that are being used now.

Once a redesign plan has been created, the parks commission will be able to estimate its cost and develop a plan for paying for it, said Malich There is as yet no timetable for when a redevelopment would occur, given that the planning process is in its initial stages.
