The City of Gig Harbor will be collecting cookies for the third annual Cookies for Soldiers campaign.
Led by Mayor Chuck Hunter’s wife Dianne, the program will benefit soldiers in Afghanistan.
Over the years, the City has enjoyed its connection to Joint Base Lewis-McChord through its Community Connector. As a result, the community has built a close-knit relationship with the men and women of the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.
In December 2009, the program shipped 5,000 cookies (50 boxes) to the soldiers in Iraq. This year, they hope to do the same for the military personnel in Afghanistan.
The community is asked to donate:
- Two dozen or more cookies, put in Ziploc bags of 4-6 cookies each
- Deliver to 3710 Grandview Street (Brick building between Pioneer and Stinson) between Oct. 22-25, anytime between 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Donate money to help pay for postage. Each flat rate postage box costs $13.45.
Afghanistan is about 90 degrees now, residents are asked to avoid cookies with frosting. Cookies should be sturdy enough for mailing, as it could be 2 weeks or more before they arrive at the destination. Cookies will be mailed on Friday, Oct. 26.
