Gig Harbor Splits From University Place In Final Proposed Redistricting Map

Under the proposal, Councilman Stan Flemming lives outside the district he represents. University Place and Fircrest are separated from Gig Harbor.

Pierce County released its final proposal for redistricting that cuts University Place and Fircrest off from the west side of the Tacoma Narrows.

The map - which Districting Master Steven Garrett produced and the Pierce County Auditor's Office released Tuesday - lumps University Place, Fircrest and Downtown Tacoma together in District 4.

Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, Ruston, West and North Tacoma would make up District 7.

“I think the final map clearly reflects the political gerrymandering that has taken place with this committee,” Flemming told The News Tribune. “I’m nothing short of disappointed in the outcome.”

Also, Joint Base Lewis-McChord would be part of District 6, which includes pockets of Lakewood, Tacoma and unincorporated Pierce County.

The . The only way it can be changed is if four of the five members of Pierce County's redistricting committee agree to do so during their meeting next month. Otherwise, the final proposal will be the county' boundaries for the next decade.

Patch will have more on this story later.
