Goodman Middle School Teacher to Challenge Rep. Angel

Karin Ashabraner, who teaches eighth grade U.S. history at Goodman Middle School, will run for the 26th District seat as a democrat.

Karin Ashabraner released the following statement on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Gig Harbor teacher Karin Ashabraner announced today she will run for State Representative from the 26th Legislative District, Position One. This is the position currently held by Rep. Jan Angel.

“We simply need stronger leadership in Olympia. Our persistent high unemployment rates on the Peninsula are unacceptable. Too many of our friends and family are facing tough economic situations that demand bold action. I’m ready to step up and get results,” said Karin Ashabraner. “We need to do a better job of helping small businesses get through this tough time."

Karin Ashabraner has lived in Gig Harbor for over 40 years. After working at the City of Gig Harbor, Karin returned to school to pursue her teaching degree. She currently teaches 8th grade U.S. History at Goodman Middle School in the Peninsula School District. Karin is also a retired member of the Army Reserves.

“With so much talk about education from K-12 to our colleges and universities, it’s surprising that there are no teachers in the legislature. I’d be excited to bring real classroom experience to! these policy discussions in Olympia,” said Ashabraner.

I believe Jan Angel has a good grasp of the issues.

What qualifications does Ms. Ashabraner have that would lead us to believe she understands the economy and how to create jobs? Teaching and the Army Reserve, while important and worthy of praise, do not exactly scream experience in business or even representing the will of the people.

One does not need experience in business to adequately understand the economy. Our own Senator Murray, the highest ranked female Senator in D.C., was a pre-school teacher before turning to politics. Also, Representative Angel had a multitude of business experience, yet still hasn't repaired the 26th Districts economy by any significant standard.
What I find encouraging about Ashabraner's run is the focus on education. Jan Angel has repeatedly stated that education is her prime directive, but the educational climate is becoming increasingly bleak. Teachers' took a significant paycut, classes are suffering from lack of materials and adequate resources, and vital programs like art, music, and sports are being cut, robbing students an opportunity to better themselves. A candidate with an educational focus is exactly what this district needs right now.

Ugh. That's not good, Starla. How many times a week do you and husband cross, or at least try toRead More cross that crosswalk.

I have seen orange flags (like the kind you use on the boat with a water skier) used at crosswalksRead More in Redmond. Perhaps putting a PVC pipe in the ground on either side of the road or attached to the nearby sign posts with a few flags inside for you to hold out/carry to the other side when you're crossing would be helpful?

Brent, we cross it about at least once a week.
