Karin Ashabraner released the following statement on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Gig Harbor teacher Karin Ashabraner announced today she will run for State Representative from the 26th Legislative District, Position One. This is the position currently held by Rep. Jan Angel.
“We simply need stronger leadership in Olympia. Our persistent high unemployment rates on the Peninsula are unacceptable. Too many of our friends and family are facing tough economic situations that demand bold action. I’m ready to step up and get results,” said Karin Ashabraner. “We need to do a better job of helping small businesses get through this tough time."
Karin Ashabraner has lived in Gig Harbor for over 40 years. After working at the City of Gig Harbor, Karin returned to school to pursue her teaching degree. She currently teaches 8th grade U.S. History at Goodman Middle School in the Peninsula School District. Karin is also a retired member of the Army Reserves.
“With so much talk about education from K-12 to our colleges and universities, it’s surprising that there are no teachers in the legislature. I’d be excited to bring real classroom experience to! these policy discussions in Olympia,” said Ashabraner.
What I find encouraging about Ashabraner's run is the focus on education. Jan Angel has repeatedly stated that education is her prime directive, but the educational climate is becoming increasingly bleak. Teachers' took a significant paycut, classes are suffering from lack of materials and adequate resources, and vital programs like art, music, and sports are being cut, robbing students an opportunity to better themselves. A candidate with an educational focus is exactly what this district needs right now.
