Group Fighting Proposed Zoning For Downtown Gig Harbor

The Citizens For The Preservation of Gig Harbor Waterfront group is fighting proposed zoning rules, including allowing buildings up to 27 feet tall in downtown.

A group called Citizens For The Preservation of Gig Harbor Waterfront is vehemently opposing proposed zoning changes for the city's waterfront.

And it wants to make sure its vocal opposition reaches as many people as possible.

The group is fighting a proposed set of zoning amendments that the City of Gig Harbor is considering. The proposed changes include allowing two-story, flat-roof buildings up to 27 feet high in the city's downtown.

The group has argued the proposed amendment - particularly that one - would alter downtown's character.

"(The Gig Harbor) waterfront is in danger of becoming a corridor with 27-foot, flat-roof buildings on both sides of Harborview in front of our harbor," wrote Jeni Woock on Patch's Facebook page. "We cannot let this happen."

Woock also says that the group will be talking with concert-goers at Tuesday's Summer Sounds at Skansie series at Skansie Brothers Park.

The Gig Harbor City Council has been holding public hearings on the proposed changes all this month, and it's scheduled to conduct a third reading of the proposed changes in September.

We want to hear from you, Patch users. What do you think about the proposed zoning amendments for Downtown Gig Harbor? What about allowing buildings up to 27 feet high? Tell us in the comments.
