Boys Track: Browne Leads Tides at Shoreline Invitational

Justin Browne finished fourth in two events to lead the Gig Harbor track team at the 24th annual Shoreline Invitational.

Justin Browne of finished fourth in the long jump competition and fourth in the 100 meter dash to lead the Tides on April 30 at the 24th annual Shoreline Invitational all-boys track and field meet.

Browne held his own in the long jump against an impressive field that included several of top competitors statewide. Browne took fourth with a jump of 21 feet, 10 ½ inches. He also took fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11 seconds flat.

Tyler Ambrose finished ninth in the shot put with a distance of 48 feet, seven inches, while Nick Laketa finished 21st in the javelin throw. Nick Lanier finished 11th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.32 seconds.

Freshman Wolfgang Beck had a strong showing in the 1600 meter run, finishing 24th with a time of 4:30.94, while Casey Peloquin finished 12th in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:27.24. Gig Harbor finished 19th overall as a team.

83 schools and over 1,000 athletes competed in the meet, which is the largest in the Northwest and features arguably the state's best assembly of talent. Leaders in nearly every event were featured, including stars Williams of Skyline, Alec Fellows of Edmonds-Woodway, P.J. Benedictus of Renton amongst others.

Fellows highlighted the field, shattering the meet record in the 110 meter hurdles, albeit unofficially. A clock malfunction prevented his hand-clocked time of 14.10 seconds from being an official record. Fellows also finished 6th in the 200 meter dash.

Williams and Benedictus squared off in the high jump, with each gunning for a height of 7 feet. Both fell short, but drew a large crowd as Williams took the event with a jump of 6’6.

Other highlights included Curtis Clauson of King’s dominating the field in the javelin throw with a score of 208. The closest competitor checked in at 193 feet.

Justin Bennett of Renton took over the state lead, all classes, in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.68 seconds. Bennett also leads the 2A state in the 200 meters.
