You are invited to support the GHYC Junior Sail Program at a dinner on Friday, June 1st, 2012.  The fun will begin with a cocktail hour, live entertainment with silent auction followed by a great dinner.  All proceeds raised will be used to support the Junior Sail Program, a non-profit organization that seeks to give back to the community by introducing youths to being on the water.

The Junior Sail Program teaches sailing skills in hopes of creating a love of boating in each young person who participates in the program. The first two years of the program have been a fantastic success!    Our effort to launch a Junior Program began with the simple notion of appreciation. Each person involved in supporting the program is grateful that somewhere, somehow, someone introduced them to boating and changed their lives forever.

GHYC members, friends, business associates of members, and local business all donated to jump-start the program.  Six Open Bic sailing dinghies were purchased in the summer of 2010, targeted towards the “learn to sail” program. These boats responded quickly in the lighter air of Gig Harbor and gave the more advanced sailors the ability to fine-tune their sailing skills.  An enclosed trailer was purchased to transport and store the Bics, which allowed the more experienced kids to travel to regattas.  Head Instructor, Ashley Berglund came to the program with six years of teaching experience and a talent for creating a kind and supportive environment for the kids. In 2011 the GHYC Junior Sail program added Lasers and the popular double-handed FJ. This summer will again focus on learn to sail, intermediate and advanced lessons, with several race weeks!
