Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Team Competes in Lake Placid

The 2013 Lake Placid International pitted the best sprint paddlers in the U.S. and Canada against each other.

Congratulations to the athletes of the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team who recently competed in the 2013 Lake Placid International.

The event, held from July 6-7 in Lake Placid, N.Y., pitted the best sprint paddlers in the U.S. and Canada against each other. 

In Women’s Junior Kayak, Alyson Morse of Gig Harbor won the K1 500m distance, then paired up with fellow teammate, Natalie Griffin, to claim the K2 500m title.

In Men’s Junior Canoe, Andrew Field of Gig Harbor won the C1 1000m final, then teamed up with Gavin Ross to finish 2nd in the C2 200s and C2 1000m distances. Field, G. Ross, Zach Guay (Seattle, Wash.) and Nick Baert combined to win the C4 1000m race. 

In Women’s Junior Canoe, Makenzie Sousley of Gig Harbor, Azusa Murphy, and Lydia Keefe Sampson (Seattle, Wash.) placed 5th, 6th and 7th, respectively in C1 500m.

The event also served as the U.S. ParaCanoe Team Trials. Team USA will compete at the 2013 ParaCanoe World Championships, to be held as part of the 2013 Sprint World Championships in Duisburg Germany, Aug. 28-Sept. 1. 

Gig Harbor's Ryan Padilla was nominated in the "Arms" category of the men's K-1 division.
