Located next to the Key Center Library, Station 46 serves as the headquarters of Pierce County Fire District 16, also…More known as the Key Peninsula Fire Department. With a combination of professional and volunteer firefighters, the department provides service for more than 1,800 residents living in the Key Peninsula and Herron Island. There are a total of six stations throughout the district, but only Station 47 in Home is staffed 24 hours a day. It covers a little more than 65 square miles of land.
The Key Peninsula Fire Department was established in 1952. It got its first fire engine two years later. Today, the department has six fire engines, three ambulances and other rescue equipment. Every day, the department is staffed with at least four firefighters and paramedic personnel.
The department's services include fire suppression, emergency aid and water rescue. Firefighters also hold CPR lessons and visit local schools to teach safety lessons to students.
