Gig Harbor Peninsula Civic Orchestra

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Civic Orchestra is a non-profit community orchestra. It is funded by contributions from theMore members, grants and audience donations. The orchestra rehearses at the Peninsula High School on Thursdays and performs for the public three times a year in December, March and June. Matthew Underwood is the Executive Director and the conductor of the orchestra.

Established in 1978, Gig Harbor High School currently has the largest student body in the Peninsula School District.More More than 1,500 students walk the halls everyday. Gig Harbor Tides's impressive football team is led by Head Coach Darren McKay, who has nine consecutive winning seasons under his belt. The Tides's biggest rivals are Peninsula High School and South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard. In addition to athletics, Gig Harbor High School offers more than 40 different clubs for students. The school principal is Ted Strong.

Formerly known as the Union High School, the building was built in 1921. The school completed its most recent remodeling project in 2006 and currently features 14 classrooms, four science labs and a computer lab for its students. Serving more than 500 students, Harbor Ridge is one of four middle schools in the Peninsula School District. It offers several athletic programs and after school clubs in which the school provides a free activity bus.

Henderson Bay High School

Henderson Bay High School offers an alternative learning environment for ninth to 12th graders. The school implementsMore same curriculum as the other two high schools in Peninsula School District. However, with an enrollment of about 120 students, the classrooms are smaller and allows teachers to work more closely with the students. The school also does not have any athletic programs. The students take the regular bus to either Peninsula High School or Gig Harbor High School in the morning. Once they get to the schools, another bus will take the students to Henderson Bay. The classes end at 1:50pm so the students have enough time to get back to the other high schools, which get out at 2pm.</p> <p>In 2010, the district named Dave Goodwin as Henderson Bay's principal. Goodwin graduated from Gig Harbor High School and spent the previous three years as assistant principal at Peninsula High School.</p>

Harbor Covenant Church

Harbor Covenant Church is located off Gustafson Drive NW. The church holds two distinct worship services. The 8:30More service is based on a music format and has more choir singing and special music. The 11am service is a contemporary, informal format.</p> <p>Kids are welcome during worship, and there is a nursery available for children from birth to three years old. The Covenant Church has Sunday School classes for children up to high school age. The Adult Christian Formation Classes meet to worship and to be more like Jesus.</p>

Purdy Elementary School is one of the eight elementary schools in the Peninsula School District. It is located byMore Peninsula High School and Peninsula School District Main Office. In 2009, The Center of Educational Effectiveness named PES as one of the state's highest improving schools in reading and mathematics. Principal Jim Rudsit oversees close to 600 students on campus.

KGHP-FM (89.9) is an educational radio station that serves the community of Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula. The studioMore of the station is in Peninsula High School, and the Peninsula School District owns KGHP. Students and volunteers take turns in the booth. Its musical content includes jazz, blues, classic rock and reggae. You can also catch local sports and emergency information that affects the local communities. The station manager is Spencer Abersold, who hosts two hours of music every Friday.

Anyone, from Peninsula High School students to local professionals, can be seen frequenting Dexter's at lunch time. A visit to here is a worthy side-trip for any visitors, as this small restaurant cooks up what can best be described as local comfort food on a bun! </p> <p>Dexters offers pizza, burgers, milkshakes, soup of the day and hot and cold drinks. It is located next to Key Bank and Bridgeway Market.</p>

Sylvan Learning Center

Located on Kimball Drive, the Gig Harbor branch of the Sylvan Learning Center is one of more than 900 local facilitiesMore in the country. This location has nine teachers on staff to work with the students' needs. They will sit down with any student from pre-K to high school. The learning center covers math, reading and writing. It will also help with homework and prepare students for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. Business hours vary depending on the time of the year.
Save Thrift Store

Save Thrift Store is a small second-hand shop operated by Peninsula High School. All proceeds from sales here go toMore scholarships for Peninsula students, and it is staffed by high school students or parents who volunteer their time. Shoppers can find everything from jeans and shoes to books and appliances.</p> <p>Save Thrift Store accepts donations during open hours. The store is closed when the school is out for holidays or breaks.</p>

Peninsula High School

With more than 1,300 students on campus, Peninsula High School is one of the three high schools in the Peninsula SchoolMore District. The principal, Tim Winter, has an online <a href="http://blogs.psd401.net/phsprincipal/">blog</a> where he posts news and announcements. The students have a unique schedule where they meet their teachers for all six classes on Mondays and Friday. On the other three days, the students have four longer hours of class. An average class size is about 30 students in each classroom. With more than half of the students at the school participating in extracurricular activities, Peninsula High School has more than 20 different options for sports programs. The Peninsula Seahawks are proud to have won individual state championships in wrestling and track. It also has more than 20 organizations for students to join.
