Trolleys Are Officially Dinging in Gig Harbor

Pierce Transit's "Team Trolley" officially opened up Gig Harbor's summer trolleys today.

Gig Harbor is celebrating its newest tourist attraction: trolleys.

The trolleys are intended to showcase the city’s waterfront and connect local businesses to one another. They run between Gig Harbor's historic downtown waterfront and the Uptown shopping district.

"You don't see a trolley running up and down the street every day in the State of Washington," 26th District Rep. Jan Angel told Patch.

"They're just very unique and nostalgic," she added.

Officials also hope that Pierce Transit trolleys will clear up the downtown parking situation.

Several prominent figures, including Gig Harbor Mayor Chuck Hunter, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland and Pierce Transit CEO Lynn Griffith attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the trolleys as part of PT’s “Team Trolley,” a group instrumental in finalizing the deal.

The trolleys will run this summer. The results will help determine if the system will become a permanent part of the city’s public transit.

Perhaps some of the best news? The trolleys are air-conditioned. (Top that, San Francisco)
