New Scam Targeting Military Families

A scam is making the rounds and targeting local military families. The 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BfSB) from Joint Base Lewis-McChord posted the alert on its Facebook page Thursday.

The letter claims to be from the Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) and asks military member's fiancées to register in its system. With a $350 fee, it claims that the registrant will have access to benefits in the event of the member's death.

DFAS, which provides payment services to the United States Department of Defense, said it does not send citizens unsolicited email messages with attachments or letters asking them to send money to pay for some benefit that “sounds too good to be true”.

“Customers who receive messages they believe to be attempts to get their personal information should take precautions against criminals wishing to gain access to their computers or those hoping to fool them into providing valuable personal information,” the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade added.
