Frugal Family: Gig Harbor Library's Free Programs for Children

The Gig Harbor Library offers a wide range of programs, clubs and events for kids of all ages

Beyond the wealth of knowledge, incredible stories, and technological resources that the local library provides there is a world of free experiences offered to children of all ages by the dedicated staff of the Peninsula Library and the Friends of the Library organization.

The Gig Harbor Library’s weekly story times provide a wonderful opportunity for children to connect with their parents, interact with their peers, learn delightful songs and enjoy themed books in an age appropriate setting. Story times vary in length and content by the audience. The Prewalker/young toddler class meets on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for simple rhymes and books accompanied by open exploration time.

The Toddler class for 2 and 3-year-olds incorporates more fingerplays and gross motor skills on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers, ages 3 to 6, may enjoy the Story Play Time on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m., which offers picture books, art activities and singing as a group.

The Key Center Pierce County Library on the Key Peninsula offers similar programs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The next session of story times will begin the week of March 14.

Children in grades 3 through 5 have a wonderful opportunity to put their science and engineering skills to the test in the Fetch! Challenges. Students collaborate in teams to solve themed hands-on problems associated with the popular PBS series starring Ruff Ruffman. Parents should pre-register in the library for these hour-long activities that are sure to interest any curious scientist in the making. The next event is titled “Crazy About Kites," and it takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. on March 15 at Gig Harbor Library.

The Gig Harbor Library Chess Club will meet through the end of April. They will start back up in June for most of the summer.
