Jan. 1, 2013: Ring in the New Year at Olalla Polar Bear Plunge

How do you plan to ring in the new year?

The 29th annual Olalla Polar Bear Plunge will kick off at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 1, and it's looking like another cold and dry event will be underway this year.

According to the Olalla Community Club website, the yearly tradition draws folks from far and wide to plunge into the icy waters as a way to cleanse the past and prepare for the new year.

The Polar Bear Plunge will take place at the Olalla Bridge across from Al's Grocery & Old Fashioned Butcher Shop at 13965 Crescent Valley Rd. SE in Olalla.

A bonfire will be provided for chilly jumpers, and The Olalla Community Club will have a booth offering refreshments and certificates for jumpers.

It's hard to say exactly how cold the lake will be on Jan. 1, but the National Weather Service is forecasting partly sunny, with a high near 44.
