State Route 16 On-Ramp To Interstate 5 Closes Thursday Night

The Department of Transportation reports that crews must replace a part of the on-ramp - an impact attenuator - that an errant vehicle damaged Thursday.

Drivers planning to head north on Interstate 5 will need to choose a route other than State Route 16 Thursday night.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says crews will close the on-ramp at 11 p.m., as crews must replace a part - an accordian-like device known as an "impact attenuator" - that an errant vehicle damaged earlier Thursday.

The impact attenuator is located on the temporary eastbound S.R. 16 Nalley Valley viaduct at the point where motorists turn left to enter northbound I-5 or right to enter southbound I-5.

The on-ramp will reopen by 4 a.m., Friday. An impact attenuator is an accordion-type device that is designed to absorb energy on impact. WSDOT places attenuators in front of fixed objects, such as barrier, to reduce impact damage to motorists, vehicles and structures.
