The List: Last Minute Holiday Getaways

No plans for Labor Day? No problem. Take in the sunshine and the end of the summer season with some easy and nearby day trips.

I guess it's time to say goodbye to summer.

I know, I know. Technically the actual summer season isn't really over until the third week of September.

However, for most of us, Labor Day weekend marks the last hurrah for summer fun (sniff, sniff).

Take heart, fellow summer lovers. The weather is supposed to be phenomenal this weekend. So, get out in it! Don't worry if you don't have plans. There are some great day trip destinations that are easy, fun, and close to home.

Purdy Spit, Penrose State Park and Joemma Beach State Park (Key Peninsula)

Why here: Three amazing beach parks all within short driving distance of each other in the beautiful Key Peninsula. Visit one, two or all three! Just west of Gig Harbor, you can take a beach picnic and beach combing to the next level. Each park has glorious views of the water. The Purdy Spit is a hot spot for beach activities, nature, and sailboarding. has a great beach, forested paths, boating and camping. is a pretty marine camping park perfect for crabbing and fishing. Why here: This beautiful lake has it all: sandy beach, grass to play on and trees to lounge under for cooling shade. Throw a frisbee, picnic by the playground, fish or take a swim. Anderson Island (Anderson Island)

Why here: A scenic and short ferry ride from Steilacoom takes you to Anderson Island, one of the great gems of the South Puget Sound. Visit of one of many parks and hiking trails that the island has to offer and take in forest, wildlife and gorgeous beaches for beach combing. Dash Point State Park (Federal Way)

Why here: This great park, just minutes from Tacoma, boasts over 3,000 acres of great shoreline access. Panoramic and unobstructed views of the Sound make this park (with camping availability) a jewel.  Bring your picnic, try some water sports or take a walk and soak in the sunshine. Vashon Island (Vashon Island)

Why here: Explore nearby Vashon Island. Just a short ferry ride from Tacoma , this island offers lots of gorgeous shoreline for relaxation and reflection. Besides the beaches, you can go island urban and explore town and chill out at the city's Ober Park or check out Point Robinson Park for stunning views of Mt. Rainier and some cool lighthouses.
