Lightning Strike Cuts Power To Thousands in Gig Harbor

In two-hour flurry, Peninsula Light rushed to restore seven of its eight substations that lost power.

During a two-hour span, whole swaths of the Gig Harbor area went black Thursday night as Peninsula Light Company scrambled to restore power.

The culprit? A lightning strike.

The utility first reported before 7 p.m., that the transmission from Tacoma Power was failing. Eventually, seven of its eight substations lost power.

From Gig Harbor North to Uptown, residents reported lights going out across town.

"Our power has gone on and off no less than 10 times (we're in Rosedale). I don't think I've ever seen the electricity so unstable," one user wrote.

In less than two hours, Peninsula Light reported how it was quickly restoring power to each substation.

By 9 p.m., it appeared things had calmed down.

"Everybody should have power back on. Appreciate your patience and kind words as we worked through this crisis," the utility wrote.
