On May 17, paramedics were dispatched to a 28-year-old female in respiratory distress. The crew found the woman outside a local department store. She was talking continuously rambling on from subject to subject with no obvious thought pattern. She told medics that she had taken methamphetamines the previous day and had used marijuana that day. She did not appear to be in any acute distress. However, medics transported her to the hospital with the assistance of additional crew members because she acted as if she may become violent. She was transported without incident.

On May 28, paramedics were dispatched to an 64-year-old female woman who was ill. She stated that she had been taking a nap and when she got up to go to the bathroom she had trouble walking and staggered to the left into the wall. She also said that she initially was experiencing a sharp pain in her left forehead and behind her left eye but they went away by the time they arrived. She told paramedics she still had facial numbness, dizziness and slight nausea. She said she had been feeling "spacey" the past week and thinks she had a couple of brief episodes of facial numbness which went away after a few minutes. During the evaluation, medics noted that she had facial tremors and she seemed to lean to her left while seated and required much assistance to stand up and walk. Medics treated and transported her to the hospital.

On May 29, paramedics were dispatched to a 48-year-old male who suffered a cut to his forehead. The man said he was cutting wood when his chainsaw kicked back, and he felt the blade nick his forehead above his right eye. He was shocked and frightened and was concerned by the amount of blood coming from the cut. When medics arrived, he was standing by his truck holding a towel to his face. He had a 4 centimeter laceration above his right eye that had stopped bleeding. Medics checked out the wound, and after seeing that the injury was not as severe as he had thought, he decided to drive himself to the hospital for stitches.

On June 1, firefighters were called to a fire in the area of Peninsula High School. Engine 56 was the first on scene and reported a one-story residence with the garage on fire. Engine 56 pulled a hose and began knocking down the fire immediately. Engine 58 and Medic 58 were the next on scene. Medic 58 was assigned to attack the fire and Engine 58 was assigned to search the inside of the structure. Engine 51 was next on scene and supplied a 600-foot water line from Purdy Drive and also ventilated the structure by cutting holes in the roof. Engine 58 searched the interior and reported that the structure appeared to be vacant due to the lack of furniture or personal belongings. Firefighters were successful in saving the home and containing the fire to the garage. A Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy reported that the home had been vandalized numerous times in the past. An investigation is underway by the Pierce County Fire Marshall.

On June 2, firefighters were dispatched to a complaint of smoke in the area. The crew found smoke coming from the yard of a near by home.  The homeowner did not have a burn permit and was burning lumber, which is illegal. The homeowner agreed to extinguish the fire. All outdoor burning requires a permit from the fire department. Please call 253-851-3111 before you burn.
